Fundo Los Nichos was my first venture into pisco label design, back in 2006. I enjoyed it enough that I haven't stopped designing labels since.
Los Nichos is Chile's oldest continuously operating pisco distillery, with a history stretching back to the 1860s in the Elqui Valley. The name comes from the original cellar, where niches were carved into the walls to store bottles of pisco and wine.
The cellar also developed a rather wonderful tradition. Visitors were invited to taste the family's products and, if you entered upright and emerged horizontal, you earned yourself an epitaph. Rigoberto Rodríguez would immortalise the more enthusiastic drinkers in humorous verses, which were then placed above the niches.
Eventually, visiting “Los Nichos” became something of a tradition for anyone passing through the valley, and the nickname stuck. More than a century later, so did the pisco.
