Known throughout the wine industry simply as RETA, Marcelo Retamal is one of Chile’s most respected winemakers. These labels were created for his personal projects, which gave us the opportunity to approach each wine with a fair amount of freedom.
The more recent labels feature illustrations by the brilliant Craig Frazier. His wonderfully simple and intelligent images gave the wines an identity that is difficult to mistake for anything else—which, after all, is the point.
The earlier labels were illustrated by me and inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s concept of the inframince—that almost imperceptible difference between two seemingly identical things. I wanted to use the idea to represent that elusive moment when the winemaker does something that perhaps only he understands, but which makes the difference between one wine and another.
